While You Were Sleeping

Before Miss Congeniality and Practical Magic, Sandra Bullock delighted us in While You Were Sleeping.  She plays Lucy, a lonely train station token collector, who rescues a handsome commuter she has been longing for secretly.  He loses consciousness after falling on the tracks so she accompanies him to the hospital where she is mistaken for his fiancée and is immediately adopted by his quirky family.

The first item on the menu is Lucy's "usual" from the hot dog stand near her work.  She always orders a hot dog with mustard and a Coke, but the vendor messes it up every time.

These adorable Bite Size Hot Dogs from BakeSpace taste just like a hot dog, but are infinitely cuter.  You just need Rhodes Dinner Rolls and Li'l Smokies and whatever toppings you prefer, but for Lucy's sake don't forget the mustard!

To complete Lucy's usual lunch order, we'll be having Coke.

Ok, not just Coke, but Coke Floats!  There's no recipe required just pour some cold Coca-Cola in a glass and spoon in your favorite ice cream.  There were so many scenes where the characters were enjoying Coke, but I think there were even more scenes where Baskin-Robbins ice cream was either mentioned or shown so why not combine the two?!

The next group of foods is my take on the Callahan's holiday dinner.  Grandma Callahan says "I could never make a good pot roast" and Mama Callahan says "these mashed potatoes are so creamy."  I just made pot roast in it's traditional form for my Book+Bites post on From Ash and Blood so I thought it would be fun to deconstruct the meal into finger foods.

The first component of our deconstructed pot roast is the beef, of course!  These Roast Beef Roll Ups from Little Pines are easy and delicious.  I used a yellow bell pepper and red onion inside the beef, but the options are nearly limitless.

Next is the potato portion of our pot roast.

These Loaded Mashed Potato Balls from Damn Delicious may just be my favorite snack from the whole evening.  They had a perfectly crisp exterior and a comforting creamy interior.  If I were remaking this menu, I would definitely create a gravy dip.  Mashed potato balls and gravy, yum!  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The last component of our pot roast dinner is the carrot.  No pot roast is complete without it!

These Carrot Fries from Kitchen Sanctuary are baked, which is nice because you can just spread them all out on a tray and be done with them rather than standing over a fryer lowering batch after batch.  I skipped the Parmesan and just used the egg and Panko that I already had out to do the mashed potato balls.  The Panko gives them a nice crunch and the time they spend roasting in the oven highlights their sweetness.

Now, that we've finished our pseudo pot roast, let's move on to something sweet.

I said it before, but I'll say it again.  I could not believe the number of times Baskin-Robbins ice cream was mentioned or shown! I mean talk about product placement, wow!
When Jack visits Peter at the hospital, he brings him a pint of ice cream.
Peter says, "Mmm. Now, this, I remember.  Everything is better. Everything looks better, feels better. Even this chocolate peanut butter tastes better."
And Jack responds, "Good.  It's fudge mint."

So, I bring you this Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Pie from The Cookie Rookie.  If you haven't noticed yet, I tend to enjoy finger foods with my movies so I made mine into mini pies using a muffin tin.  You could easily swap out fudge mint for the chocolate peanut butter ice cream, but I would consider skipping the peanut butter cups too and adding chocolate chunks or even peppermint patties instead.

We're going to end our evening with another drink option.

This Spiked Punch from Kitchen Fun with my Three Sons was inspired by the scene when Jack joins Lucy at a New Year's Eve party.  He sees her heading straight for the punch and says, "that's spiked" and Lucy says "thank God."

That wraps up our menu for While You Were Sleeping, but I'll leave you with a fun fact.

Did you know that this movie was originally about a woman in a coma and a man who pretends to be her fiancée?  Believe it or not, people thought that was a bit creepy and stalkerish.  It's funny how simply reversing the roles made it into the well known rom-com it is today.

See you next time!
