Grease

This 1978 musical classic starts out in summer at the end of the 1950s.  Strait-laced Sandy falls for rough around the edges Danny during a summer fling that ends too soon for the lovebirds.  Little do they know they're about to wind up at the same high school, but is Danny still the same boy she met on the beach?

I just love when films make the pairing so easy.  Grease practically screams '50s diner food so that's what were cooking up today!

We're basing most of our meal off of Danny's order at The Frosty Palace.
"Just gimme a double Polar Burger wit' everything and a cherry soda wit' chocolate ice cream."

When their order came out and it looked like they both got milkshakes instead of cherry soda, I was so confused.  I thought maybe it was just an error, but after doing a bit of research I discovered it wasn't an error, it's Old Fashioned Ice Cream soda!

I used this Old Fashioned Strawberry Soda recipe from Pint Sized Baker and it was very much like a strawberry milkshake, but thinner and it had a fun tang to it from the Ginger Ale (or in my case Strawberry Mango sparkling water).  If you want to be authentic to the movie then sub cherries for the strawberries, but really the flavor options are limitless.

To complete Danny's order, we're serving up a double polar burger and fries.  Even though he didn't order fries, you gotta have them. Right?!

I didn't really follow a recipe for this burger so much as a technique.  This Classic Smash Burger was exactly what I was looking for in my diner burger experience.  The one pictured is still a bit too thick to be a squeeze (or smash) burger, but I made several more for dinner and the trick is to only use a couple ounces of meat and smash it way more than you think you need to.  The fries are thanks to Ore-Ida so no recipe needed for those either.  Just bake and enjoy!

Does the ice cream soda count as dessert? Oh well, we have another option!

Rizzo: "How about a little Sneaky Pete to get the party going?"
Jan: "Italian Swiss Colony. Wow, it's imported! I brought some Twinkies. Anybody want one?"
Marty: "Twinkies and wine? That's real class."
Jan: "It says right here it's a dessert wine."

Twinkies!  Need I say more?!

You could stick with the sleepover scene and pick up some dessert wine too, but I couldn't help but notice the old Pepsi-Cola ads and I feel like Pepsi goes better with the diner dinner.  I wish I could have tracked down some of these Soda Shop Pepsi-Cola cans.  They were released to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Grease the musical in 2021, but they were only available for a limited time so I made do!

That wraps up our diner-style movie-inspired menu featuring Grease!  I hope you make time to enjoy this musical number soon! Until then I'll just leave this right here...

See you next time!
