I'm taking it back to the '80s again this month for another must-see classic, The Goonies! Not only can this movie pass as a fall favorite because of the setting with the changing leaves and overcast sky, but its thrilling adventure filled with skeletons and pirates makes it a not-too-scary Halloween pick too. Like many of the movies featured here, it also has a nostalgic element that is perfect for the start of cozy season and has earned its place in my annual fall lineup.
The Goonies is filled with lovable characters - Mikey the asthmatic leader, Data the inventor of crazy and occasionally useful tools, and of course the always hungry Chunk with a heart of gold. We follow this group of misfits on the adventure of a lifetime as they look for long lost pirate treasure in the hope of saving their neighborhood from a property developer who plans to destroy their homes to build a country club.
I've marked this as family-friendly because it is rated PG, but bear in mind if you're watching with young children that '80s rating guidelines let a lot more slide than what we're used to today. You can expect some profanity and suggestive language, but I think Roger Ebert put it best when he said, "Goonies walks a thin line between the cheerful and the gruesome, and the very scenes the adults might object to are the ones the kids will like the best."
🍴
You're going to love this simple menu. It's another one like the menu for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial that can be enjoyed without spending much time in the kitchen! Our first item is inspired by the scene when the boys first come in contact with the Fratellis.
Mama Fratelli serves the boys murky, brown water and since I have no desire to drink questionable water, we're going with tea!
"It's wet, ain't it? Drink it!"
Continuing right along with another scene featuring the Fratelli family when poor Chunk confesses every bad thing he's ever done in order to avoid having his hand stuck in a blender. Mama Fratelli drops a couple of tomatoes into a blender to demonstrate its power. After Chunk admits to several years worth of pranks and misdemeanors, she grows tired of his saga and yells, "hit puree".
"Hit puree" salsa
Don't worry, no harm comes to Chunk but the pureed tomatoes did spark a craving for salsa! I picked up my favorite chips and salsa from the store, but it really wouldn't take long to whip up some of your own. This salsa recipe from Gimme Some Oven only takes about 10 minutes and since you have control of the ingredients you can adjust the spice to suit your preference.
For the main dish, you can make your own pizza, but I just did that for E.T. so I had no problem sticking with the authenticity of The Goonies and ordering pizza.
Pizza is eaten by the Fratellis while the children hide quietly under the fireplace and it's seen again when Chunk's mother brings a Dominos pizza to her food-loving boy at the end of the film.
We're moving on to the sweet stuff and if you've already watched The Goonies then you can probably guess our next item.
When Chunk is tied up in the basement with Sloth, the mistreated third Fratelli brother, he tries to toss him a Baby Ruth. Sloth's hands are tied so the candy bar hits him right in the face, which turns out to be a good thing because the desire to reach the candy bar forces him to break out of his chains and free his new buddy, Chunk, as well.
Which leads right into our next Chunk and Sloth scene in which they are getting into more sweet snacks.
You could choose any variety of ice cream here because Chunk mentions several when he discovers the big freezer filled with it, but Rocky Road is mentioned more than once and frankly it's delicious so why not?
That wraps up this fun and nearly effortless menu for The Goonies! I hope you make time to cuddle up with a few of these snacks and join the Goonies on their epic adventure.
I love The Goonies! Fitting it should follow ET, this one not directed by Spielberg but based on one of his stories, so Spielberg-esque! He just gets kids, doesn’t he? As for the menu, who doesn’t like pizza and candy bars, but chips and salsa are my favorite!
Another movie I haven’t yet seen! I may end up spending my declining years watching movies I should have watched when you kids were little!
ReplyDeleteWell, at least you have a classic to look forward to during your "declining years" 😆🤣
